Cholesterol and Women

Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of American women, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). As with men, elevated cholesterol levels signal danger for a woman’s health, putting her at risk for both heart disease and stroke.

Women usually have higher HDL ("good") cholesterol levels prior to menopause because estrogen (the female sex hormone) raises this level. Therefore, women are particularly at risk after menopause, when their estrogen levels drop along with their HDL levels, and their LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels increase. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) found that over half of postmenopausal women needed to reduce their total cholesterol levels.

Men and women are also advised to maintain different levels of HDL cholesterol. Whereas men are considered to have low HDL cholesterol at less than 40 mg/dL, women have low HDL cholesterol at less than 50 mg/dL. Both men and women are advised to strive for HDL levels above 60 mg/dL.

Post-menopausal women are advised to be particularly aware of the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and cardiovascular disease. It was previously thought that replacing lost sex hormones in post-menopausal women would provide the same cardio-protective benefits experienced by women with normal levels of estrogen. However, several major studies have since found that estrogen/progestin therapy increases the risks of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer, blood clots and overall cardiovascular disease.

Be aware and do exercise regularly!!

6 Natural Weight Loss Tips

Author: Kenneth Edwards

Commonly, and first of all, people who want to lose weight naturally think about reducing the amount of food they eat.

This is only part of the solution, but not exactly the best there is. In fact, depending on the amount you reduce in your diet, it may even be dangerous to your health. So, how do you lose weight naturally, effectively and safely?

Here are some points one should consider when trying to lose weight naturally:

Beware of the Crash Diets

If you are thinking of trimming down, you probably think that dropping the calories can alone shed off your unwanted excess of fat. Probably, this is because of the current fad in advertising about low-calorie food products and beverages. What you may not know is that this could be dangerous because when you decrease your calorie intake below the required levels, the body begins to digest the fats.

Sounds good, but it isn't, in actuality. Burning fat requires a lot of energy. Since there is not much energy in the body to facilitate metabolism of fat, it will run at a very slow pace resulting in fatigue, illness and a weak immune system. And you'll still have the fat. Fat is not the only place where the body gets it's energy from.

A low-calorie diet is also compensated for by the body by burning muscle. People on this type of diet, who revert back to their old eating habits, end up gaining back most of their weight, if not all the weight they have shed off. This would consist mainly of fats.

And since fats have more volume per mass than muscle, this person ends up having the same weight as before, but will be bulkier. When losing weight, one should keep in mind that they should lose excess body fats only. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't reduce your calories. Just make sure that you've met the body's minimum requirement for calories to survive, energize, and repair.

The Best Nutrition To Lower Cholesterol

by: Stewart Levison

There is a saying that goes. "We are what we eat." This is so true as the food being consumed may affect the cholesterol levels inside the person’s system. This makes this makes the person prone to high blood pressure or heart disease through age, which could leave the patient, paralyzed or dead.

The only thing to do before it is too late is to make some changes in the individual's diet. While many of the good stuff that people love to eat have high concentrations of LDL better known as bad cholesterol, this can all change by consuming those that have HDL or good cholesterol. Here are a few examples.

A good way to start a healthy diet is to have a breakfast. Instead of eating bread, the individual can consume oatmeal instead. Studies have shown this can lower the cholesterol in the body by more than 20. This can be purchased at the supermarket and eaten during anytime of the day such as dessert after a light meal or as a snack.

During lunch or dinner, the person must have some vegetables in the meal. Those who order can have fish or poultry instead of eating red meat. Such dishes are not high in saturated fats, which are healthier.

Those who love to cook at home can try mixing some healthy things ingredients in the meal. One example is garlic that has natural properties that can declog the arteries and again lower the odds of succumbing to heart disease.

People are often told that fats are not good for the diet. This isn’t entirely true because this comes in many forms. There are fats that are healthy such as unsaturated ones and omega 3 fatty acids.

Monosaturated and Polysaturated ones are also effective since these are usually found in cooking oils. This means food preparation also plays a big factor in reducing lowering one’s cholesterol levels.

The individual should read the label at the supermarket and read the ingredients to find out if this is healthy for cooking.

Being a bit overweight or noticing a lot of bulges in the body is one way of knowing that the person is potentially at risk for succumbing to disease to high levels of cholesterol in the system.

If the individual is unable to make a proper dietary plan, a specialist can help make one so all the person has to do is follow it.
